| The following Honorary members have been selected for outstanding “naked” performance, but not for full membership, since they did not set a record. Don Sliger - 1970 203.16 MPH – nitro 2 x Royal Enfield, one way at Bonneville, class A/F-3000, run in 1970. In 1970, Don Sliger made a “down” run at Bonneville at 203.16 MPH in class A/F- 3000. Don experienced a slipping clutch on the return run, and was not able to set a record over 200 MPH. Don’s fantastic 1st run was the first “naked” motorcycle in the world to be officially timed at over 200 MPH. Don’s Royal Enfield was powered by two engines, running on a big load of nitromethane and displacing about 1,500cc’s. The machine still exists, and is on display at the British National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham, England. Remember that this fantastic speed was done almost 40 years ago, and there is STILL no showroom production bike built today that is faster – even WITH a fairing ! Riley by this point had set a member of records over 200 MPH with a fairing on his pushrod HD Sportster engined Bonneville Special. No turbo, no nitrous, just good old-fashioned nitromethane, in an iron-head motor first produced in 1957. Vance Breese - 1988 199.94 – Nitro Harley –A/F-1350, Bonneville 1988. Running an Evo HD Sportster engine in a Bonneville-special chassis, Breese was “knocking on the door” 20 years ago with one of the smallest pushrod-engine bikes to ever to touch the Naked-200 MPH mark. Breese’s bike – with the same basic Harley design from 1957 - would be competitive today with most all-motor naked Suzuki Hayabusa naked bikes from famous builders. |
